As you come over the bridge into the village of Saint Martin, this is the view across the marshes.  Our house, Maison Mielles, is a couple of minutes walk away.

We live and have two gîtes, just outside the village of Moyon.  Now, it may well not be the most beautiful village in France but it is a very good place to live.  It has the third highest growth rate of any commune in France, mostly thanks to our rather good Mayor.  It isn’t very large, somewhere around 1200 people, but it has double in size in the 17 years that I have lived there.

The school has gained a class every year since my girls have been going there, which is now 5 years for my eldest daughter.  And so far, so good.  What is perhaps most amazing about the school, is that 2 of the form teachers are actually men, which is very unusual these days in Europe.

The other very good thing about Moyon is the number of activities going on.  There are dance and aerobic classes for all ages, circus classes, art and flower arranging classes, yoga classes, massage classes just to name a few of the activities run by Famille Rurale.  My girls both do circus training, and spend pretty much all day on Wednesdays at the riding centre, run by the truly delightful Lucie Janvier.  Her parents, were the very first people we met in Moyon on our first evening, and the invited to dinner on our very first night.

In terms of employment it is also doing pretty well, what with the Chocolate Factory, the milk plant, Patrick Amand, who makes wooden houses (construction time about 5 days) and barns, a builders merchant, a large agricultural community, a butchers, a bakers, a village shop, two restaurants, two bars, a medical centre, retirement home and many other things I haven’t remembered off the top of my head.

The other handy thing about Moyon, is that it is very centrally located for pretty much everything in la Manche, and just an hour from Caen and an hour and a half from Rennes. It has excellent access and from my personal point of view it is just 15 minutes from work, at the Ecole de Gestion et Commerce, in Saint Lô.

Snowy Start in Saint Martin de Bréhal

This morning I woke up just as the snow was starting. It wasn’t really cold and I was massively over dressed. But by the time I got home after my dog walk my hair was thick with snow and it was staring to fall in snow ball size flakes. By 11am the sun was out and it had disappeared!
